The USS Schurz, lost off the North Carolina coast in 1918, was an armed cruiser built in 1894 as the SMS Geier for the German Imperial Navy.  Using both sail and steam for propulsion, the USS Schurz (Geier) is a unique archaeological record of this transition to mechanical propulsion power. This USS Schurz Distinctive Diver Specialty, available only at Olympus Dive Center, tells the story of not just the fate of USS Schurz, but of her life and her crew as the SMS Geier roaming the world in support of Germany's interest. before and during WWI.  The Schurz remains the only German Imperial Navy warship (the SMS Geier) captured by the United States Navr during the 1st World War.

What You Learn

  • Detailed Workshop discussion of the SMS Geier history and voyages before and after her transition to the USS Schurz
  • Advanced dive planning concepts and contingencies concerning deep, off-shore wreck diving

Prerequisites

To take this course, you must be:

  • A PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or qualifying certification from another training organization) with a minimum of 25 logged dives.
  • A PADI Enriched Air Nitrox Diver (or qualifying certification from another training organization)
  • 15 years old
  • Experienced with deep offshore dives (greater than 70 feet)

The Scuba Gear You Use

You use all the basic scuba gear including a dive computer and other specialty gear

  • Class size is limited to 8 students
  • Weekend or weekday scheduling formats, year around

  *Students must provide their own personal items including mask, fins, snorkel, booties, gloves, regulator, BCD, and tanks. We have rentals available for the regulator, BCD, dive computer, wetsuit, and tanks.

*Boat dives are required for an additional fee. If you book this course On-line you will be contacted by our staff to reserve the appropriate dive trip(s).
